Wonderful World News - Day 147 - Mission-Driven Banks (book)

      Here's today's wonderful news

about a wonderful world!

This is part of a series of daily reminders that a more wonderful world is being built from the actions of millions of people, each day. You are offered examples to explore whenever you would like to be uplifted and inspired, energized and reassured. This is a wonderful type of world news!

It seems obvious that we experience what we are paying attention to, so if we want more life-enhancing experiences, we should direct more of our attention to more life-enhancing news, happenings, and stories.

Also, when we feel life-enhanced, we are radiating, broadcasting those "vibes" outward, and others are uplifted into resonance, to some degree. And the more of us radiating, the more others are uplifted. So joy is service!

In this series, we emphasize discovering whole groups of people who are creating a more wonderful world, each in their own way.

You can add things you find, for others to discover and pay attention to, via commenting on this post, or any post in the series. DAY 147

Visit

This isn't just a couple of people with a theory. It is about an active acupuncture point for societal renewal and planetary healing.

"Cracks in a System as Opportunity

"... Katrin Käufer, who reflected on the role that finance plays in our society, and how it can be used as a tool for social change. "If humans intend to take care of the planet and society, then the purpose of the economy is to provide those things that we are in need of," Katrin reflects.

The banking system, then, has the task of facilitating financial transactions in this economic system. "Yet something is wrong: this system is upside-down," Katrin tells us. She reminds us that the human and planetary needs are not driving the system. Rather, money has become the driving force.

What is needed, according to Katrin, is for the order to be flipped right-side up again, so that human well-being and the health of the planet become the driving forces of the system. We are in the middle of a societal waking-up, visible in various cracks in the financial system that bring to light our own agency in co-creating money both on the individual and the collective level."

"Just Money: Mission-Driven Banks and The Future of Finance (book)

This brand-new, landmark book on mission-based finance by Katrin Kaufer and Lillian Steponaitis will be available from Feb 2021.

Banks define our future. Every investment decision writes the story of where we are going as society, which project, business, or initiative receives funding - and which does not. Much work has been done to critique our financial system, but less has been done to present viable, alternative models.

Katrin and Lily, who have been leading the Finance Lab within the Presencing Institute, have written this short and accessible book on their experience in working with mission-based banks around the world over the past 10 years. Such banks use finance as a tool to create a more equitable and sustainable economy. Katrin and Lily call this practice “Just Banking”.

Over the last decade, the authors have worked extensively with Just Banking institutions, facilitating learning communities and networks that provide a platform for these organizations to learn from each other, exchange best practices, and innovate. This work has given the authors a unique perspective on this emerging field and enables them to provide the reader with real-world cases and stories that bring the work to life.

In this book, the authors explore whether Just Banking practices and innovations can inform the next iteration of our financial systems, and if so, how."

"Lily Steponaitis is Special Projects Manager at the Self-Help Federal Credit Union in Oakland, CA and a former Post-Graduate Fellow at the MIT Community Innovators Lab. Her work focuses on the role financial institutions can play in creating more just, equitable, and democratic economies. In 2016 she researched and co-developed a MITx Massive Open Online Course with Dr. Katrin Kaeufer about just banking. The MOOC was the first of its kind in the field and has reached over 23,000 participants in 161 countries."

Now it's your turn. Inspired by what you've discovered, what is one thing you will do this day to make the world more wonderful for yourself and perhaps also for someone else?
